Osteoarthritis affects more than 27 million Americans. It also affects 3 million Canadians. A recent study by Tylenol Canada found that over 90% of Canadians experiencing Osteoarthritis suffered with physical limitations. The overwhelming majority however retained a positive outlook on life.
As a pharmacist, I have many patients come to me and ask me how they can best manage their Osteoarthritis. Here’s the 3 steps that I tell them:
1) Exercise regularly. Do light exercise that gives you a wide range of motion, yet is gentle on your joints.
2) Protect your joints. Don’t work them too hard, don’t strain them. If you’re a little overweight, it may not be your fault, but work at losing the weight, because excess weight contributes to damaging your joints and causing pain.
3) Look at natural treatment options. Serrazymes are for some people a great natural option for treating the pain, because rather than deadening the nerves, Serrazymes get rid of the cause of the pain. You see, Arthritic pain is caused by the dead tissue from Arthritis in your joints. If you get rid of the dead tissue you get rid of the pain. When you think about foods that are good for your heart, tart cherries may not be the first thing that springs to mind. Researchers at the Cardiovascular Centre at University of Michigan have found that compounds in tart cherries may protect against the kind of inflammation that’s associated with both diabetes and heart disease.
Here’s what the researchers did. They acquired rats that were susceptible to heart disease, the medical test equivalent to humans. The scientists split the rats into two groups. Both groups were fed the same amount of calories in a high fat diet, but one group received a tart cherry extract as part of its diet. Here are the results:
1) Rats fed the cherries didn’t gain as much weigh or build up as much body fat as the other group.
2) They also had significantly lower cholesterol and triglycerides than the other rats.
3) Rats fed the tart cherry extract had significantly fewer of the molecules that signal heart inflammation
It’s too early to say conclusively that tart cherries are good for your heart, but it is encouraging. Researchers are now conducting human trials.
There’s a joke going around about the current strain of H1N1. It says that “the H1N1 is a combination of the Avian flu, the Swine Flu and the traditional human flu. I guess that makes it the flying pig flu”. Other then that, there’s nothing really funny about this illness. We don’t even have the vaccine for it yet!
